This week, from September 23 to September 28, the Office of Internships & Career Development will be hosting several events to help students realize their career goals beyond Berea College.
These events have been put together as part of Career Development Week—a week dedicated to inviting students into the methods and means of building increased career potential that will serve them as students at Berea College and as workers thereafter. Nearly Career Development Week events require students to register on Handshake before attending, as do many events hosted by Internships & Career Development staff. Unless specified, it most likely requires registration via Handshake.
There are a few noteworthy events in particular that students may want to take advantage of:
Dress for Success
Dress for Success is an event in which juniors and seniors can acquire a $400 grant for professional attire. Using this grant, students are required to purchase at least one full suit, with the possibility of acquiring alternate jackets, pants, and professional accessories like ties being available if there are funds left over.
The corresponding event on September 24 is required to receive funding for this year, but don’t worry if you missed your chance this year, rising seniors and juniors—you will still qualify for next year!
Alumni Career Chat Lunch with Dylan Hunziker
On September 26, the Office of Career Development will invite Berea College alumnus Dylan Hunziker, ’14—the week’s Convocation speaker—to share his career experiences as a Foreign Service Officer at the U.S. Department of State over lunch. From noon to 1 pm, Hunziker will be taking questions about his career experiences, providing an opportunity before he takes the stage in Phelps Stokes Chapel that afternoon.
The lunch provided will be free, and all attendees must first register on Handshake.
Miscellaneous Drop-In Events
On September 25, the Career Development Office will be offering free tacos from a local food truck, as well as insights into funding opportunities for juniors and seniors—from internship funds, covering graduate school application fees, and relocation funds following graduation, there is a multitude of ways that the Office of Internships & Career Development can aid students in their career goals.
On September 27, they will be offering donuts along with discernment journals for students, designed to help students meditate on their career goals and desires for fulfilling work.
Neither of these events require students to register on Handshake—they can just stop by as they please!
Opportunities Beyond Career Development Week
As Career Development Week comes and goes, the Office of Internships & Career Development will continue to host events for students. From inviting employers to campus—including the Smithsonian Museum, Aflac, and the FBI—to Alumni Talks themed around the career journeys of Berea College alumni, there are many more career-related events to come throughout the semester.
In essence, Career Development Week is designed as a means for the Office of Career Development, in particular, to reach out to students, informing them of their ability to provide aid in numerous ways—whether that be concerning professional opportunities or preparation for graduate school.
If there are any lingering questions, be sure to ask Amanda Tudor, Director of Career Development, at tudora@berea.edu. In addition, a calendar of Office of Internships & Career Development events can be found on their website.
