The planning of the new Student Center has been underway throughout the fall semester. While the center will be in a familiar space—namely the Woods-Penniman building—the goal is to hear as many student voices as possible to know what they would all be interested in being incorporated into the new Student Center.
During the months of September and October, architects visited campus on at least two occasions to hear from students about what they would like to see in the new space. Suggestions from students varied, but they included:
· Individualized prayer spaces
· Enclosed and sound-proof study rooms
· A playground for children living in the Eco-Village
· A lactation room
· A spacious game room
· An art gallery displaying student works
Few details have been confirmed, as the architects are still trying to see what students would like to see included in the space and figuring out the details surrounding renovating Woods-Penn.
The Student Center’s completion is years away, but students have the opportunity for their voices to be heard and their suggestions considered in assembling a space built specifically for students on campus.
Berea College News will stay on top of the College’s plans for the Student Center and make sure to report any developments.
